Obasa, Meranda may resign as Lagos Speaker this week

…House reconvenes tomorrow March 3
There is strong indication that the ousted speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and the current Speaker, Rt (Hon) Mojisola Meranda may resign from the position this week.
It was gathered that the resignation of the duo to pave way for a new Speaker from Lagos West likely on Wednesday was a resolution reached by the Governance Advisory Council ( GAC) in their latest meeting.
Sources disclosed that the new Speaker would be announced by the GAC likely on Wednesday, putting an end to the speakership imbroglio in the state.
For some weeks, the House of Assembly had been enmeshed in serious leadership crisis after the removal of Obasa by the 32 out of 40 lawmakers on January 13 2025.
Obasa was immediately replaced by Hon. (Princess) Mojisola Meranda as Speaker by the 32 lawmakers.
The ousted Speaker, however, challenged his removal in Court as he claimed that the 32 lawmakers did not follow due process in removing him.
But on February 27 (Thursday), Obasa stormed the House of Assembly with heavy security to conduct controversial plenary session with only 4 lawmakers, claiming he still remains the Speaker.
On February 28, over 35 lawmakers appeared in Lagos High Court, Ikeja, as the Court adjourned to March 7 for hearing of the suit filed by Obasa.
Meanwhile, the crisis had divided the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State and the GAC , as the members have pitched their tents with the two warring personalities.
The crisis further polarized the party along the two major power blocs, the Justice Forum and the Mandate Movement, deepening their political rivalry.
..House reconvenes March 3
Western Post learnt that the lawmakers would reconvene tomorrow Monday (March 3) for plenary session.
A short message sighted by Western Post at about 9:30pm on Sunday (Today), directed the legislative staff to report at their duty post for the purpose of the plenary session.
The directive was given by the Acting Clerk of the House.
” Good evening Distinguished Colleagues…
I have the instruction of the Acting Clerk to inform you all that there would be Plenary Session tomorrow Monday 3rd March 2025.
“To this end, all Officers are requested to report for duty as normal Legislative business resumes. Pls inform others. Thank you”.
Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, the House of Assembly had directed all staff and legislative aides to work remotely until further notice due to the ongoing leadership crisis in the legislative arm.
The directive was issued on Sunday by the Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Babatunde Abubakar, in a memo addressed to all staff.
The move, according to the memo titled “Amendment to Remote Work Schedule Arrangement,” aims to ensure staff safety and prevent any potential violence stemming from the leadership dispute.
“To this end, all categories of staff at the Assembly, LAHASCOM, and legislative aides are requested to work remotely from home until further notice,” the memo stated.
