The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has accused the 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of instigating the people of the south-east against the federal government.
Umahi made the accusation during a stakeholders’ meeting on the Lagos-Calabar coastal road projects in Lagos.
He expressed his views regarding Obi’s recent criticisms of the project, which he labeled as a misplaced priority.
The federal government had initiated the construction of the road, which is set to traverse nine states, including Lagos, with concerns arising about its funding and potential impact on businesses along its route.
On Tuesday, the former Anambra governor, criticised the federal government over the project, describing it as a misplaced priority.
Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections had labeled the demolition of structures for the project was as “insensitive” and “heart-wrenching”.
In his reaction, Umahi countered Obi’s remarks by pointing out that during Obi’s tenure as Governor of Anambra, he endorsed the demolition of structures for road development.
The minister also criticized Obi for his recent criticism of the federal government regarding the project, emphasizing that compensation processes for affected property owners are already underway.
Umahi’s remarks highlight the contentious nature of the project, which has sparked debates and raised questions about its viability and implications.
As discussions continue, stakeholders grapple with finding common ground amidst divergent views and concerns.
