ODA backs Amupitan as INEC chairman, urges restraint among stakeholders
The Okun Development Association (ODA), a socio-political group in Kogi State, has expressed support for the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as a recognition of competence and integrity.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its President-General, Amb. (Chief) Akenson Rotimi, the association commended President Bola Tinubu for the appointment, noting that it reflects a commitment to merit and national service.
The group described the development as an honour to Okunland, Kogi State and Nigerians who value capacity and character in public office.
ODA also pledged its full support for Amupitan as he assumes leadership of the electoral body, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver on the commission’s mandate.
According to the association, Amupitan’s academic and public service record demonstrates discipline, adherence to due process and the moral strength required to handle sensitive national responsibilities.
“This appointment is a clear endorsement of competence and character, and we are confident that Prof. Joash Amupitan will discharge his constitutional mandate without fear or favour, strengthening public trust in the electoral process,” the statement read.
While acknowledging that the office of INEC chairman attracts public scrutiny, the association urged political actors and stakeholders to exercise restraint and pursue grievances through appropriate legal and institutional channels.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and democratic stability, expressing optimism that Amupitan would carry out his responsibilities with fairness and integrity.
