OECD commends Tinubu reforms, eyes partnership with Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has called for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to support the country’s reform agenda and improve investor confidence.

The President spoke on Friday during a meeting with senior OECD officials on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, where discussions focused on economic reforms, trade competitiveness, investment facilitation, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, solid minerals, and support for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

During the meeting, OECD Deputy Secretary-General Frantisek Ruzicka pledged the organisation’s support for Nigeria’s economic transformation efforts through the provision of economic and investment data to strengthen policy planning and attract long-term capital.

“We support and understand the pillars of your reforms. I think other leaders should learn from you, especially in improving public finances and working conditions. OECD can be partners with you on the ongoing reforms, particularly the priorities,” Ruzicka said.

The discussions also addressed investor confidence, Africa’s risk perception, and the need for greater transparency and policy consistency across the continent.

President Tinubu said Africa must work to reshape global perceptions about its investment environment by promoting accountability and discipline.

“Africa’s risk perception must change. Africa must be disciplined and accountable over various projects. We welcome a structured cooperation between Nigeria and OECD in support of ongoing reforms in Nigeria,” the President said.

Tinubu also defended major economic reforms introduced by his administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, describing them as difficult but necessary decisions.

“The removal of the subsidy was necessary. Yes. There was a fight back. Easy access is hard to give up. Even the multiple exchange rates had to go. I have come to serve my people, not to benefit a few,” he stated.
