Ofili confirms nationality switch, to represent Turkey in athletics

Former Nigerian sprint sensation, Favour Ofili, has formally announced her decision to represent Turkey in international competitions.

In a statement released on her X handle, @FavOfili, the 21-year-old athlete described the move as the beginning of “a new chapter,” while expressing appreciation for the opportunity to have represented Nigeria in the past.

“Having won six gold medals, two silver medals, and two bronze medals in championship meets, and becoming a 200m finalist, I have also experienced major disappointments from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC),” Ofili said.

She accused both bodies of negligence, citing her experiences during the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.

Ofili explained that the decision was not financially motivated but driven by her desire for a fresh start, noting that it would also mean sitting out this year’s World Championships in Tokyo.

“This change comes from the heart, not from any financial motives,” she stressed.

The athlete further expressed optimism about her future, adding: “I am truly grateful to have discovered a new home in Turkey.”
