Ogun alerts residents of imminent floods

The Ogun State Government on Thursday alerted residents of imminent flash floods between March and July.
Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, gave this warning at a briefing held in Abeokuta, to acquaint the residents of the state with the flood alert for 2025.
Oresanya said those living on floodplains of Isheri, Akute, Warewa, Yemule River banks in Ijebu-Ode, Ifaara, Ebute-Oni in Ogun Waterside, Arakanga, Isakale in Ado-Odo Local Government among others should get prepared to relocate to safer grounds before the coastal flood between September and November.
He said the ministry yearly issues flood alert to residents towards raising their consciousness about flood and its adverse impacts on the environment and socio-economic life of the people.
The commissioner said residents must cooperate with the government and refrain from dumping refuse into waterways among other unhealthy practices that could hinder the flow of water leading to flooding.
He added that the government in the last five years has de-silted about 988.3km of rivers and streams and constructed 698m of drainages to allow for free flow of water to curb flooding across the state.
The commissioner disclosed that in a bid to further mitigate flooding in wetland areas of Isheri, Akute and Warewa, the state government has concluded plans to create more tributaries for Ogun Rivers and complete the dredging of Opa Aro River.
