Ogun State Police averts farmers-herders conflict, brokers peace amid rising tensions

The Ogun State Police Command has successfully intervened to prevent potential conflicts between farmers and herders in two separate incidents, demonstrating proactive policing and fostering peaceful coexistence in the state.

On January 17, 2025, the Command acted swiftly following a report from Mr. Okegbenro Julius of Favour CDA, Imala Elega, regarding the destruction of his five-hectare rice plantation in Ilupeju Ibaro Village, Abeokuta.

According to Mr. Julius, at about 6 PM, herdsmen with a large number of cows invaded his farm, causing significant damage to his crops. A security guard on the farm captured the incident on video, prompting the herdsmen to flee the scene with their cattle. One cow was detained during the incident.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ilupeju to convene an emergency meeting with key stakeholders, including community leaders and representatives of the farming and herding communities.

The CP assured Ogun State residents of the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities or conflicts.

In another incident on January 23, 2025, tensions flared in the Mowe community after the reported killing of six cows belonging to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders of Nigeria, Agege Chapter.

The Miyetti Allah Chairman, Alhaji Muhammed, alleged that the Baale of Amu Village, Abiodun Ogunyemi, was responsible for the act. The police promptly arrested the Baale and initiated an investigation.

To prevent escalation, CP Ogunlowo instructed the DPO of Mowe to mediate between the conflicting parties. A peace meeting, chaired by the DPO, brought together leaders from both communities, including Alhaji Muhammed, farmers’ representatives, and Baale Amu Village Chief Alani Ogunremi.

During the discussions, both sides agreed to reconcile, with the villagers consenting to allocate designated grazing areas for the herders. Miyetti Allah leaders pledged to assess the land and provide feedback.

The CP commended their commitment to peace and emphasized the need for continuous dialogue and mutual respect to avoid future disputes.

The Ogun State Police Command reiterated its dedication to maintaining peace and law and order across the state. It called on community members to support ongoing efforts to foster harmony and promptly report incidents to the authorities.
