Okpebholo bans unregistered vigilante groups over Uromi killings

…suspends CP Friday Ibadin

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate suspension of all unregistered vigilante groups operating in the state, following the gruesome killing of travelers in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area. The governor also suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), as part of measures to restore order and accountability in the security sector.

A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., revealed that the local vigilante group responsible for the March 27 killings was operating illegally, as it was neither profiled nor registered under the Edo State Security Corps. The state government emphasized that such unauthorized security outfits do not align with the principles and objectives of the Okpebholo administration.

“After reviewing the preliminary report of the unfortunate incident, Governor Okpebholo has ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state and the suspension of CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), Commander of the Edo State Security Corps,” the statement read. The government stressed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all residents.

Investigations into the killings are ongoing, with fourteen suspects already arrested. The Inspector General of Police has also deployed a special team to intensify the manhunt for others involved in the tragic attack. The state government assured the public that justice will be served swiftly and transparently.

Furthermore, the Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to the constitutionally guaranteed rights of Nigerians to move freely and conduct lawful business across the country. The administration condemned any actions that threaten the safety and security of citizens and vowed to take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.

In the wake of the tragedy, Governor Okpebholo has engaged with community leaders, victim families, and the Kano State Government, as most of the deceased were reportedly from Kano. The government is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure support for the affected families.

The governor urged all stakeholders to remain calm while the investigation progresses, assuring that the state remains committed to justice and security. He reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for lawlessness and impunity in any form.

The Edo State Government called on residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that only registered and properly monitored security groups would be permitted to operate in the state moving forward.
