Olakulehin Family to honour late Olubadan with public book presentation

Adejayan Gbenga –

The Olakulehin Royal Family has announced the public presentation of a commemorative book titled “How Not to Be a King” in honour of the late 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7, 2025.

Originally intended to celebrate the monarch’s 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary, the event will now serve as a central part of the final rites and post-funeral reception for the revered traditional ruler. Oba Olakulehin died just two days after his 90th birthday and five days before the anniversary of his ascension to the throne.

According to a formal invitation signed by Chief Solomon Ayoade, the Chief Press Secretary to the late Olubadan, the public presentation will take place on Friday, July 8, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

The book, “How Not to Be a King”, chronicles the life and reign of the late monarch and features personal reflections, tributes, and testimonials from family members, the Olubadan-in-Council, friends, and close associates.

“The family has decided to go ahead with the public presentation of the book as a way of honouring and immortalising the values and leadership ideals of the late Oba Olakulehin,” the statement read.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to lead dignitaries, traditional rulers, and political leaders at the event. Local government officials and members of the public are also anticipated to be in attendance to pay tribute to the legacy of a monarch widely regarded for his wisdom, humility, and principled leadership.

Oba Olakulehin was celebrated for his progressive outlook on tradition, his commitment to the unity of Ibadanland, and his advocacy for education and cultural preservation. His passing is seen as the end of a significant chapter in the city’s rich traditional history.

The family expressed hope that the event would serve as both a celebration of Oba Olakulehin’s legacy and a source of inspiration for future leaders in traditional and civic roles.
