Oliseh defends Eguavoen against critics

Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh has spoken out against Nigerians who have criticized interim manager Augustine Eguavoen.
Eguavoen has faced backlash from fans following the Super Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Despite the loss — their first in the qualifying series — the Super Eagles remain at the top of the table with 11 points and have already secured qualification for the tournament, which will be held in Morocco.
Responding to the criticism, Oliseh, a former teammate of Eguavoen, praised him for stepping up during a challenging period for the Super Eagles. He also emphasized that the team’s current struggles are not Eguavoen’s fault.
Speaking to News Central, the former Super Eagles coach said, “The situation we found ourselves in is not Eguavoen’s responsibility at all. He is trying to salvage what was already there before he came. If you are Nigerian, the best you can do for your fatherland is to support the person in charge.
“Whether you like him or not, he is not representing his own family; he is representing you at home. So, give him the moral support.”
Oliseh also expressed confidence in Eguavoen’s ability to guide the Super Eagles to success as they prepare for their World Cup qualification campaign.
