Olubadan Ladoja affirms jurisdiction over Ibadan, not Oyo State or Yorubaland
Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has clarified that his authority is confined to Ibadan and does not extend to Oyo State or Yorubaland. He made the statement while emphasising his focus on addressing the challenges within his domain.
Oba Ladoja spoke during a Coronation Luncheon organised by the Ibadan Foundation on Sunday at the Kakanfo Hotel, Ring Road, Ibadan, to celebrate his ascension to the throne. His media aide, Adeola Oloko, noted that the Olubadan highlighted the importance of concentrating on his official responsibilities rather than areas outside his jurisdiction.
He pointed out that his area of influence covers 11 local government areas in Oyo State, home to approximately four million residents, and is clearly defined under the Oyo State Chiefs Law and Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration.
Addressing the gathering, which included notable figures such as Asiwaju Bode Amao, Chief Bayo Oyero, Otun Balogun, Oba Kola Adegbola, and members of the Iyalode Group, Oba Ladoja said he has concrete plans to manage Ibadan’s development challenges effectively.
He cited recent interventions, including his involvement in resolving public protests over the Circular Road and the establishment of an anti-land-grabbing committee. He also hinted at ongoing land reforms aimed at curbing illegal encroachments within the city.
Oba Ladoja further announced the creation of the Olubadan Economic and Investment Committee to recommend strategies for reviving dormant industries in Ibadan, with the aim of generating employment for local youths.
“We have inherited legacies of bravery, nobility, and hard work from our forefathers. This does not mean we should resign ourselves to fate,” he said, reflecting on Ibadan’s heritage. He also celebrated the conferment of traditional titles on distinguished Ibadan indigenes, noting the support from other traditional rulers.
The Olubadan concluded by stressing his commitment to focused leadership, stating that his primary concern remains the development and welfare of Ibadan and its residents, rather than seeking influence beyond his jurisdiction.
