Olubadan throne leads others in Oyo — Oba Hamidu Ajibade

The Asipa Olubadan of Ibadanland-designate, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, has asserted that the Olubadan of Ibadanland remains the head of all traditional rulers in Oyo State.

In an interview with 32FM, Oba Ajibade dismissed arguments suggesting that the Alaafin of Oyo should serve as the permanent chairman of the state’s Council of Obas.

He emphasized Ibadan’s historic dominance in warfare and political influence, stressing that the city stands above other traditional stools in the state.

“Ibadan people are warriors. In the past, Oyo used to seek Ibadan’s assistance during wars. Ask the Ijaiye palm tree about the war of Ogunmola—Ogunmola of Beere went to support the Alaafin,” he said.

The monarch further explained that Ibadan’s leadership tradition is rooted in progress and the welfare of its citizens, adding that the incoming Olubadan, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, is committed to tackling youth unemployment and promoting social stability in the city.

“All those arguments are unnecessary. Whoever becomes king in Ibadan focuses on the city’s progress, ensuring that the youth are not led astray and are gainfully employed. That is what Ladoja is committed to, and that is what we have asked him to continue doing. Ibadan will be the first among traditional rulers in Oyo State. Ibadan leads the rest,” he declared.

This statement comes just months after the Oyo State House of Assembly passed a bill in May mandating the rotation of the Council of Obas chairmanship among the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Soun of Ogbomosoland.

The legislation was introduced to resolve long-standing disputes and rivalries among the three major traditional institutions regarding leadership of the council.
