The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr.) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has urged journalists across the country to uphold fairness, balance and objectivity in their reportage.
The monarch made the call on Tuesday while receiving the newly elected executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, on a courtesy visit to the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan.
Oba Ladoja cautioned journalists against the spread of fake news and the practice of destructive journalism, stressing the need for responsible and ethical reporting.
He encouraged the media to embrace developmental journalism, noting that best practices in developed societies prioritise constructive engagement and nation-building. “Gone are the days of ‘pull-him-down’ journalism,” the Olubadan said. “Modern journalism should be constructive and geared towards promoting peaceful coexistence, unity, progress and meaningful development in society.”
The traditional ruler also offered prayers for journalists nationwide, asking God to grant them protection, wisdom, favour and success as they discharge their professional responsibilities.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, Oyo State Council, Comrade Abas Adewale Akeem, thanked the Olubadan for the warm reception, describing the visit as an opportunity to pay homage to a foremost traditional ruler and to receive royal blessings for the union’s activities.
Comrade Akeem called on other traditional rulers in Yorubaland and beyond to emulate Oba Ladoja’s exemplary leadership, citing his resilience, humility, service to God and humanity, commitment to cultural preservation, and dedication to human and material development.
He assured the monarch of the continued support of journalists in the state, pledging that NUJ members would remain committed to promoting the development of Ibadanland and Oyo State at large.
The NUJ delegation included the Vice Chairman, Comrade Abiodun Atilola; Secretary, Comrade Temidayo Adu; Treasurer, Comrade Moses Morenikeji; Chief of Staff, Comrade Khalid Imran; National Trustee, Comrade Seye Ojo; and members Rofiat Animosahun Olateju, Lekan Yusuf, Peter Ayoade and Sina Akinpelu.
