Olugbon of Orile-Igbon backs embattled Chief Imam amidst Ogbomoso religious controversy

The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, has expressed support for the embattled Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Talihat Yunus Ayilara, stating that traditional rulers do not possess the authority to dismiss religious leaders.

This statement comes amid a controversy sparked by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, who recently appointed Habib Ayilara as the Chief Imam for his palace. The appointment has been interpreted by the local Muslim community as an attempt to replace the current Chief Imam, Tahilat Ayilara.

The controversy has escalated into a legal dispute, with a lawsuit filed at the Oyo State High Court seeking the removal of Tahilat Ayilara as Chief Imam.

In response, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) criticized Oba Olaoye’s actions, describing them as a “subterfuge to weaken Islam, a stratagem to enslave Muslims, and a chicanery to exploit the Muslim population of Ogbomoso.”

However, Oba Alao, in a statement issued on Tuesday, called for calm and urged MURIC to refrain from further criticism, emphasizing that stakeholders in Ogbomoso are working to prevent any division within the Muslim community. “Ogbomoso is a peaceful place with people of different religious beliefs cohabiting in love,” Oba Alao stated, noting that all parties are committed to maintaining harmony.

Oba Alao, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, emphasized the importance of unity, declaring that “we will not sit by and allow the promotion of division in the Ogbomoso Muslim community.”

He further reminded the public that there is an ongoing court case regarding the matter, asserting that Sheikh Ayilara remains the Chief Imam until the court rules otherwise.

The Olugbon cautioned against any actions that could fan the flames of division, emphasizing the traditional role of monarchs as cultural custodians rather than enforcers in religious matters. “As obas, we are custodians of our culture and traditions, rightly promoting our values and heritage. Traditional rulers in Oyo State are not partisan on religious affairs,” he added.

Oba Alao reaffirmed his support for Chief Imam Talihat Yunus Olushina Ayilara, stating that he should continue in his role as he was chosen by the Muslim community. He reassured MURIC and other concerned stakeholders that the matter is under judicial review, and urged them to trust the legal process.

The Olugbon concluded by advising traditional rulers to avoid actions that could lead to discord within their domains and to remain steadfast in upholding truth and unity among their subjects.
