First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-South geopolitical zone, as part of efforts to tackle food insecurity and child malnutrition in the region.
Mrs Tinubu launched the programme in Calabar, Cross River State, where three community food banks were inaugurated simultaneously.
The intervention is targeted at children under six, pregnant women and lactating mothers, with 1,179 beneficiaries already enrolled and 2,089 food packages distributed under the programme.

The First Lady said the initiative was designed as a sustainable response to food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable households.
“The National Community Food Bank Programme is a deliberate and sustainable response to food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable households. It is designed to provide nutritious food to children under the age of six, pregnant women, and lactating mothers, giving them the support required for healthy growth and development,” she said.
She urged state governments and other subnational authorities to adopt the programme to expand its reach and improve its impact.
According to her, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its focus on food security, healthcare and the welfare of Nigerians.
“This initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, particularly its commitment to improving food security, strengthening healthcare outcomes, and promoting the well-being of all Nigerians,” she added.
