Oluremi Tinubu urges schools to balance discipline, free expression

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has emphasized the need for educational institutions to create an environment where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum.

She made this statement through her spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, on Friday, following a viral video showing student nurses chanting during her visit to Delta State for the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South zone.

The event, held on March 25 at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, aimed to encourage midwives in the fight against infant and maternal mortality.

While appreciating the warm reception from the Delta State Government, nurses, midwives, and student nurses, the First Lady acknowledged reports that some students of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences had been issued queries over their participation in the chants.

In response, her office stated that while institutions have the right to enforce discipline, it is also important to recognize that students often express excitement in a lighthearted manner.

“Educational institutions should foster an environment where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum,” the statement read.

The First Lady’s office urged the school authorities to handle the situation with fairness and understanding, ensuring that students continue to learn in an atmosphere that balances discipline with free expression.
