Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde premieres directorial debut Mother’s Love at TIFF50

Veteran Nollywood actress and TIME 100 honoree, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, premiered her directorial debut, Mother’s Love, at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The exclusive screening was held at TIFF’s Lightbox 5 and marked a major career milestone for the actress, celebrating her transition from screen icon to filmmaker.
Mother’s Love is a deeply emotional exploration of maternal strength, focusing on the often-overlooked experiences of first-born daughters. The film touches on themes such as grief, PTSD, and social class divides, offering a nuanced look at how motherhood shapes identity and resilience across different backgrounds.
The premiere was attended by a wide range of notable figures from the film industry and beyond. Present were Nigeria’s NFVCB Director General Shuaibu Hussein, filmmakers Obi Emelonye, Lonzo Nzekwe, Charles Uwagbai, and cast and crew members including Lilian Afegbai, Rogers Ofime, Oreoluwa Awolowo Nora, and Oyin Debby. Celebrities such as Lala Akindoju, OC Ukeje, Linda Osifo, and media personality Effe Tommy were also in attendance.

The film received high praise from attendees and industry insiders. UK-based filmmaker Obi Emelonye described the work as “a debut that deserves to be studied at Harvard,” commending its storytelling, emotional impact, and cinematic quality.
Ekeinde’s debut behind the camera adds a new dimension to her already celebrated three-decade career. Known for helping shape Nollywood’s early growth, she now enters a new creative chapter—one that centers her voice as a director telling stories rooted in African experience and emotional truth.
Mother’s Love is scheduled for a Lagos premiere in early 2026, followed by an international theatrical release. The film’s global rollout will coincide with Mother’s Day, emphasizing its universal themes and appeal to audiences worldwide.
