Ondo AG orders coroner’s inquest into UNIMED Registrar’s death

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, has invoked the state’s Coroner’s Law.

He also called on the Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Ayedun Odusola, to appoint a coroner to investigate the death of Mr Ezekiel Imole Adeniran, Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.

In a letter to the Chief Judge, Ajulo noted that reports indicated Mr Adeniran died under questionable circumstances on or about July 17, 2025.

He said the move was in the public interest to determine the cause and manner of death and establish whether anyone could face criminal liability.

“Following briefing and information at my disposal, I believe that in the public interest, a formal inquiry in the form of a coroner’s inquest is warranted,” he wrote.

Acting on the request, Justice Odusola appointed Dr Dickson Ogunfuyi, Chief Magistrate and Head of the Ondo State Multi-Door Court, as coroner to lead the inquest.

The call for an inquiry comes amid conflicting claims over the registrar’s death. While some reports allege he took his life by consuming poison after a white paper indicted him and recommended his dismissal, his family insists he was forced to drink the substance by unknown assailants.

Ajulo assured that the inquest would be conducted in full compliance with the Coroner’s Law of Ondo State, ensuring transparency and adherence to due process.
