Ondo approves N3.5bn for rural roads, launches flood mapping initiative

The Ondo State Government has approved a N3.5 billion counterpart fund for the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), a World Bank-supported initiative aimed at improving infrastructure and boosting agricultural productivity in rural communities.

Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, said the approval highlights Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to rural development. He added that engineers would inspect roads across all 18 local government areas to identify those most in need of rehabilitation.

“As part of this process, engineers will conduct hydraulic designs to assess water flow and upgrade drainage systems,” Olawoye stated. “We urge citizens to be patient as the focus is on durable infrastructure, not temporary fixes.”

The government also approved a comprehensive flood mapping exercise to proactively tackle climate-related challenges and protect vulnerable communities across the state.

Speaking after the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, said the flood mapping will involve identifying high-risk areas and analyzing the structural and environmental factors behind their vulnerability.

Dr. Loko noted that while the state is focused on prevention, it is also making provisions to support residents affected by unexpected flooding through emergency relocation and relief distribution.

He appealed to residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, to cooperate with government officials during the assessment and intervention exercises.

Commissioner for Information, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, emphasized that the decisions reflect Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to infrastructural development and urged the people to continue supporting the administration as more developmental projects are set to roll out.
