Ondo Catholic Diocese condemns demolition of Owo Memorial, demands answers

The Catholic Diocese of Ondo has condemned the demolition of the Owo Memorial Park by the Ondo State Government.
The church described the action as reopening wounds from the June 5, 2022 attack that claimed 41 worshippers at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo.
In a statement signed by the Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Jude Arogundade, the Church expressed disappointment that the park, built to honour the victims, was demolished without prior consultation or explanation.
“The Catholic Diocese of Ondo unequivocally condemns and finds unacceptable the sudden and unannounced demolition of the Memorial Park in Owo,” the statement read. “This site served as a place of reflection and healing for the community after the tragic events of 2022.”
The Diocese said it had written to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, requesting an official audience to understand the reasons behind the government’s decision.
It also clarified that the park was never a burial ground but a public space for remembrance, officially commissioned by the government and blessed by the Church.
The Diocese further stated that the site was lawfully acquired and designated by the state for the purpose of memorialising the victims.
