The Ondo State Government has commenced the disbursement of over N350 million to more than 11,000 indigent students of the state studying in various tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Akure on Tuesday, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described the bursary and scholarship scheme as a key instrument for promoting educational excellence and easing the financial burden on students and their parents.
Represented by his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, the governor said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to education and human capital development.
He said, “The year 2025 has been a remarkable chapter in our educational journey, as our interventions have continued to transform lives, institutions and communities across Ondo State. Today’s bursary, scholarship and financial assistance programme being given to 11,358 students is a demonstration of our government’s deep concern for the welfare of our students.”
Aiyedatiwa added that the policy aims to ensure that no child from the state is denied education due to financial hardship, urging beneficiaries to remain disciplined, focused and committed to their studies.
The Administrative Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, Mrs Funso Omoniyi, explained that the scheme covers five categories, including scholarship awards for outstanding students, financial support for law school and medical students, and assistance to physically challenged students.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the government recently approved funds for several educational interventions, including payment of WAEC registration fees for students.
The National President of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS), Temitope Alade, commended the governor for his support and urged students to uphold good conduct in their institutions.
