The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old driver, Ayoade Idowu, following the death of a Vehicle Inspection Office official, Adediji Sesan, in Akure, the state capital.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement, saying the incident occurred around 9:30 am on Friday, October 9, 2026, along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure.
According to the police, the 35-year-old VIO official was on routine patrol with his colleagues when he stopped a white Mitsubishi van, with registration number AGL 992 XX, for inspection of its documents.
The driver allegedly drove off after initially stopping, hitting Sesan in the process as the official requested the vehicle’s particulars.
Jimoh said the victim sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor. His remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The police spokesman said Idowu, a resident of Gbogi Street, Akure, had been arrested and detained, while officers had visited the scene and commenced investigations into the incident.
He added that the case file would be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation, assuring the public that appropriate legal action would follow the findings.
The command urged motorists to obey lawful traffic instructions and cooperate with authorised enforcement officers, warning against actions that could endanger lives while attempting to evade routine checks.
