Ondo police deny forcing officers to pay ₦39k for Lagos election duty

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Ondo State Police Command has denied a viral report claiming that Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) were ordered to contribute ₦39,000 each to fund deployment to Lagos for the forthcoming local government elections.
In a statement, the Command described the allegation as false, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and discredit the integrity of the police force.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Funmilayo Olayinka Olushola, said no such directive was issued and no officer was asked or compelled to make any financial contribution.
She explained that the deployment of officers from neighboring states followed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at ensuring adequate security during the elections.
“This kind of inter and intra-command cooperation is a standard practice in the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement noted, stressing it aligns with the IGP’s commitment to a transparent and accountable police service.
The Command added that all necessary logistical and welfare arrangements were made to ensure smooth deployment, with officers reporting at their assigned posts without personal expense.
Reacting further, Olushola criticized the report’s author for misrepresenting police procedures and promoting misinformation.
