‘Only Tinubu loyalists will get my support’ – Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has vowed to throw his weight behind candidates who support President Bola Tinubu’s reelection at the FCT area council poll, no matter their political affiliation.
Wike disclosed this at the 60th birthday of Sen. Sandy Onor, the senator who represented Cross River Central Senatorial District from 2019 to 2023, in Abuja on Saturday.
The FCT Minister, who said he owed no one an apology for supporting Tinubu, indicated that it was his duty to ensure the failure of any candidate who doesn’t support Tinubu’s reelection during the FCT area election scheduled for Feb 21.
“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on Feb. 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win,” he said.
“It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand,” Wike added.
Unlike other local government elections in Nigeria, which are managed by state commissions, the FCT area council election will be overseen and conducted directly by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Approximately 1.68 million voters have been cleared to participate across 2,822 polling units in the FCT, and a total of 637 candidates from 17 political parties will be contesting the 68 available positions.
