Open Defecation: Lagos Assembly calls for enforcement of relevant environmental laws to curb menance

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called for strict measures to curb open defecation in the state.

The House made this call on Tuesday during plenary session when Hon. Stephen Ogundipe (Oshodi/Isolo 1) raised the matter under Urgent Public Importance.

In his motion, Ogundipe warned that open defecation tarnishes Lagos’ reputation and hinders sustainable development, calling on the relevant agencies to fully enforce the Lagos State Environmental Laws.

Contributing to the debate, Hon. Femi Saheed (Kosofe 02) called for clear policies to ensure proper management of sanitation facilities, supporting the intention of the motion.

Hon. Aro Moshood (Ikorodu 02) linked open defecation to waste accumulation, stressing the need for stricter waste management, especially in market areas like Mile 12.

Meanwhile, Hon. Bonu Solomon (Badagry 01) called for the arrest of homeless individuals contributing to the poor sanitation situation, urging local government chairmen to support state efforts in maintaining cleanliness.

Also, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 01) proposed the introduction of affordable public toilets as a practical solution.

However, the lawmakers urged the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to fully enforce environmental laws prohibiting open defecation and in ensure the availability of free public toilets statewide.

They also stressed the need for a sustained public awareness campaign to educate residents on its dangers.

The lawmakers agreed to intensify awareness campaigns and collaborate with private sector stakeholders to fund sanitation initiatives across Lagos.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. (Hon) Mojisola Lasbat Meranda strongly condemned the practice, emphasizing the urgency of improving sanitation infrastructure.
