Opinion: Fayemi’s hypocrisy, by Kola Amzat

Very recently, during a book launch in FCT, Abuja, the immediate past Minister of Solid Minerals and ex-Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi was at his hypocritical best with his outburst that the widely celebrated “Occupy Nigeria Project” organized by the progressive groups across the country during Goodluck Jonathan regime was politically motivated and indeed, aimed at attracting public condemnation, ridicule and opprobrium to that government.

He went further by declaring that the nation economy was much better under that PDP discredited regime.

It’s particularly not clear what informed his outburst, but, it’s very curious to note that the ex-Minister just emerged from his slumber after about 9 years of that widely acclaimed event organized across the country to make that damning and regrettable pronouncement, which in all reasonableness might have redefined his political future.

The pertinent question to ask here is that: who was the ex-Minister attempting to get at? Who was his target to put on the spot? The leadership hierarchy of APC who collectively organized the event and midwifed the transition regime of PDP to APC? Ex-President Muhammud Buhari who was indeed the flag-bearer of the party during that historic 2015 presidential election that swept away ex-president Goodluck Jonathan consequent upon that symbolic event, amongst other factors? Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who was the main architect and driver of coalesce party that drove away the PDP government?

Or, the Civil Liberty Organizations (CLOs) that also collaborated with the progressive groups, across the country with a view to drawing the curtains on that very corrupt and incapacitated PDP government in order for a new government with capacity and focus to emerge?

At this juncture, it’s instructive to note that the members of the progressive political class, press, CLOs and other major stakeholders have chosen to completely ignore the ex-Ekiti state governor, preferring to let him continually to wallow in frustration, self-destruct and pity.

But, someone reserves the responsibility to put him on check!

Even though, several reasons have been alluded for that obvious indiscretion that might have encouraged the Ekiti born politician to venture into such mis-adventure, it’s not largely impossible that his frustration is not unconnected with his inability to make the ministerial list, which he fervently desires.

But, the ministerial list besides being the prerogative of the president only, it’s also exclusively meant for very reliable, dependable, trusted and tested political faithful who are emotionally mature, and not unduly loud and who has the capacity to maintain confidentiality particularly on the issues that bother on governance.

Could Dr. Kayode Fayemi confidently boasts that he could pass all the aforementioned tests?

For emphasis, it’s the progressive groups that organized the nationwide “Occupy Nigeria Project” that drew curtains on Jonathan era and brought forth APC government, in which the ex-governor bountifully and immensely benefitted as a Minister of Federal Republic and also later deployed its platform to be Ekiti state governor, that he’s NOW making spirited efforts to march to Golgotha for crucifixion. What an irony!

If someone specializes in beating drum, he must be conscious of those who are listening to the drum and also providing interpretations.

Of course, the ex-Minister is already in the eye of the storm for this type of indiscretions and periodic unguarded pronouncements that have long characterized his political trajectory.

Even though, he has benefitted enormously from the progressive government, it’s ironical that he has never been known to wholeheartedly believe in the cause, ethos, ideals and philosophies of the progressives.

Nigerians vividly recall that ex-governor Fayemi continually deployed the platform of the Governors’ Forum as the then chairman of the body to always instigate confusion in the smooth running of APC, all in his inordinate quest for Nigerian presidency.

He was indeed dominant in the then Aso Villa cabal that held Nigerian by the jugular in their bid to mainly frustrate the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as APC presidential candidate.

Nigerians also recollect that he was also an APC presidential candidate and only withdrew from the race when it became apparent to him that he was not only attempting to wear the shoes that were much bigger than his legs, he was indeed attracting the indignation and anger of the South West citizenry.

But, at the time he withdrew it was already clear to the then elected APC presidential candidate that the Ekiti politician is not a man to be trusted and relied on. This perhaps might have accounted for his eventual exclusion from the ministerial list.

But, is this justifiable reasons why he’s embarrassing Nigerian public with falsehood and concocted lies that “Occupy Nigerian Project” was politically motivated?

If the path to tread is to be biting the fingers that fed him, providence surely has its own way of taking charge and control.  And, it will!

He should enquire from ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo who is already being tormented in his twilight by nature for his sheer hatred of Yoruba race.
