Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has showered praise on former interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, lauding his exceptional leadership and player-first approach as the team transitions into a new chapter under incoming boss Eric Chelle.
Speaking on Mikel Obi’s latest podcast, the Napoli striker took a moment to honour Eguavoen’s impactful tenure, crediting him with fostering a culture of mutual respect that resonated deeply within the squad.
“I have to say a very big thank you to Austin Eguavoen for a job well done,” Osimhen said, his voice brimming with gratitude.
Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles captain turned coach, stepped in as interim manager during a turbulent period for the national team, earning plaudits for steadying the ship with a blend of tactical acumen and paternal care.
The 26-year-old forward emphasised the harmony Eguavoen cultivated, noting, “No player has ever gone against his authority or instructions. He really deserves his flowers. He’s an amazing coach.”
“Not just as a coach but also as a father, for the way he has treated every player. He has given us respect, and I am saying this—every player can testify that we give him the same respect in return.”
Osimhen’s glowing tribute highlights the profound influence Eguavoen wielded, not just on the pitch but in the hearts of his players—a legacy that sets a high bar as the team prepares for life under Chelle’s leadership.
With Eric Chelle now poised to take the reins, Osimhen’s comments serve as both a fond farewell to Eguavoen’s tenure and a bridge to the intense, results-driven philosophy the new coach is expected to bring.
