Osimhen sets sight on Champions League golden boot

After scoring a hat-trick in Galatasaray’s 3-0 mauling of Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday night, in-form Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed his desire to claim the top scorer’s award in this year’s UEFA Champions League.

Speaking on the club’s website after his heroics, which brought his tally to six goals and made him the current leading scorer in this season’s UCL, Osimhen said his dream can be achieved with the help of his teammates.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup winner, who became the first Galatasaray player to score a brace in back-to-back Champions League matches and only the second in the club’s history to score a hat-trick in the competition, expressed confidence that he can finish as the tournament’s top scorer, acknowledging that it will take a collective team effort.

“Of course, I think I have the quality for something like that, but with the support of my teammates, I can do it,” Osimhen said. “They like to give me the ball like they did today. It’s a team effort, and I believe that with my teammates, it’s possible. I will fight for it.”

“I’m also very happy about the goals, of course, but I’d like to thank my teammates again. We’re going to build on this momentum. I believe that we will be very happy at the end of the Champions League group stage, and we will continue to work together,” he added.

Osimhen’s performance at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday saw him surpass Obafemi Martins’ record for goals in UEFA competitions.

He officially became the Super Eagles player with the most goals across European competitions (25), surpassing the previous record of 23 held by Obafemi Martins.
