The Osun State Government has announced plans to appoint global Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund, as part of efforts to reposition the sports sector in the state.
The state Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Prince Kola Adewusi, disclosed this while receiving members of the Osun State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) during a courtesy visit to his office in Osogbo.
According to Adewusi, “I have made up my mind on who is going to be the chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund, and nothing is going to change it for now — the person is Davido. I spoke with him about it already and he said no problem. I also told the Governor about it, and the goal is to leverage his influence and network of associates and friends across the country to raise donations into the trust fund.”
He explained that the planned Sports Trust Fund would attract support and donations from within and outside the state to ensure sustainable sports financing and development.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to sports infrastructure, Adewusi disclosed that the ongoing renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium would be completed soon and upgraded to meet Olympic standards.
“The ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium will meet Olympic standards, and the project will be completed in the shortest possible time,” he assured.
In his remarks, outgoing Chairman of Osun SWAN, Timothy Agbor, called for stronger collaboration between sports journalists and the state government through the Ministry of Sports to enhance sports promotion and visibility in the state.
