Osun Govt slams APC National Secretary over call for state of emergency

The Osun State Government has strongly condemned the call by the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, for President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state.

It would be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday, suspending Governor Sim Fubura due to the political crisis in the state. Following this development, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the APC National Secretary, called for a state of emergency to be declared in Osun State as well, citing the Local Government crisis in the state

Describing the call as reckless, self-serving, and unlawful, the state government argued that the political situations in Rivers and Osun States were vastly different.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, accused Basiru and the Osun APC of attempting to take over the state government through manipulative tactics.

“It must be emphasized that this senseless and unacceptable notion is not held by Basiru alone but by the entire Osun APC, who are constantly scheming to seize power through the backdoor,” Alimi stated.

“For any keen political observer in Osun, it is clear that the APC lacks the popularity and political strength to defeat Governor Ademola Adeleke in any election. That is why they resort to various antics, including their failed attempt to cause chaos in the state by enforcing a non-existent Court of Appeal judgment to reinstate their former chairmen and councillors. That action nearly plunged Osun into anarchy,” he added.

Alimi credited Governor Adeleke’s foresight and leadership for averting potential chaos by advising duly elected local government chairmen to avoid their secretariats after their swearing-in ceremony.

He urged President Tinubu to dismiss Basiru’s appeal for a state of emergency, describing it as baseless and politically motivated.
