Ahead of the February 22, 2025, Local Government elections, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has assured all stakeholders that the State Government will not interfere in the process.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke commended various political parties for maintaining a peaceful atmosphere during their campaigns and encouraged candidates to prioritize promoting their agendas over engaging in violence.
He said: “As a government, we are committed to free and fair elections. We have monitored the preparatory activities of the state electoral commission and assure the public that we respect the commission’s independence to conduct credible elections.
“We are highly educated in Osun State. Our literacy level is at an all-time high. This is not a state where residents can be misled. They read and understand court rulings and political subjects without being deceived. I urge our people to prepare for February 22. It is an opportunity to vote for your preferred council chairmen and councilors.
“We are a nation governed by law. The judiciary, as has been said recently, is the harbinger of hope. We must avoid misrepresentation and misinformation about court processes. We have a sacred duty to avoid fake news, which is an offense punishable under the law.
“We have credible reports of plots by certain elements within the opposition to foment a crisis in Osun State. I warn those involved to desist because of the grave consequences.
“As the Chief Security Officer of this state, I have directed security agencies to deal decisively with any promoter of violence within the rule of law. We will not allow this state to be plunged into needless conflict.
“Democracy is about ballot papers, not guns and cutlasses. Go to the polls on the 22nd and express your preference peacefully. Osun is a bastion of democracy. We are ready and capable of defending our democratic heritage.”
