The Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammadu Ali Pate, has disclosed that the Federal Government, through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has provided free treatment for over 1,000 women affected by Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF).

The initiative also includes emergency obstetric services, such as cesarean sections, delivered at more than 30 primary and secondary healthcare facilities across Nigeria.

Speaking at the 65th National Council of Health (NCH) meeting in Maiduguri, Borno State, Prof. Pate emphasized the government’s dedication to tackling maternal health challenges and reducing mortality among women.

“Through the NHIA, over 1,000 women have received free treatment for VVF, and emergency obstetric services, including cesarean sections, are being offered at over 30 facilities. By year’s end, we plan to expand these services to more centers, ensuring free emergency care for women facing life-threatening complications,” he stated.

Prof. Pate also highlighted government efforts to improve healthcare access for the poorest and most vulnerable populations. He noted the expanded medical relief program, which guarantees essential health services and products for those in need.

“Maternal health is a top priority for this administration. We are committed to scaling up these interventions to reduce maternal mortality and provide life-saving care nationwide,” he added.

The Federal Government has revitalized over 8,000 primary healthcare centers using N46 billion from the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

In collaboration with state governments, over 43,000 frontline health workers have been trained to support the goal of achieving universal health coverage by 2030.

Recognizing challenges in the health sector, Prof. Pate appealed to professional groups to prioritize Nigerians’ welfare. He assured stakeholders that the government is addressing workers’ concerns to ensure industrial peace and harmony.

Themed “Accelerating Pathways to Universal Health Coverage: Strategies for 2030 Success,” the 65th NCH meeting brought together health commissioners, development partners, and civil society organizations to reinforce coordinated efforts aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the nation.
