Over 20 motorcycles set ablaze as Okada kills one in Ejigbo

Over 20 commercial motorcycles, commonly known as okada were set ablaze by angry youths in the Jakande Estate area of Ejigbo, Lagos, on Thursday after a fatal accident that killed one person.

WesternPost gathered that the incident occurred after a rider plying one-way knocked down a pedestrian who died immediately.

In retaliation, youths in the area were said to have embarked on seizing motorcycles in sight and set them on fire.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, said that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area, Folorunsho Gabriel, had responded to the emergency immediately, rescuing the suspect from the mob attack and evacuating the corpse from the scene.

“The Police arrived at the scene on time and rescued the motorcycle rider from lynching. The Police immediately took the rider to the hospital for treatment and evacuated the pedestrian. Before the Police arrived back at the scene, a mob was already burning the motorcycles left behind by the fleeing riders.

“The Lagos State Police Command condemns jungle justice in very strong terms. Anyone found engaging in such would be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Hundeyin said.

Normalcy has, however, returned to the area as security operatives were on ground to forestall further mob action or reprisal by the okada riders.
