Oyebanji compensates landowners for TCN power project in Ekiti

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Governor Biodun Oyebanji has disbursed N503 million as compensation to 1,050 landowners whose lands were acquired for the construction of the 132/133KV Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) power project in Ekiti State.

Speaking at the official compensation exercise in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, the Governor described the project as a critical national infrastructure that would significantly enhance power transmission while stimulating trade, commerce, security, and economic growth across the state.

He urged beneficiaries to view the compensation as due recognition of their sacrifice towards the development of the state, adding that the initiative represents a major step in connecting all towns in Ekiti to the national grid.

“By linking every community in Ekiti to the national grid, we are laying the foundation for industrial expansion, job creation, and improved livelihoods,” Oyebanji stated.

The Governor also advised landowners to put the funds to good use, noting that while no amount could equate to the sentimental value of ancestral lands, the payment was an effort to ensure fairness.

Oyebanji clarified that the current disbursement covers landowners in Ijan and Ikere-Ekiti, while other affected communities would be compensated in subsequent phases.

Special Adviser on Land Matters, Prof. James Olaleye, commended the landowners for their patriotism and cooperation in facilitating the project.

Speaking on behalf of the claimants, Chief Bode Ajisefini pledged the community’s full cooperation with the project team and assured that there would be no acts of vandalism or delays.
