Wife of the Governor of Osun State, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola, on Friday inaugurated a women campaign group ‘Akoni Obinrin Osun’, for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and other candidates in the state ahead of the 2023 general election.

Speaking at the event held in Osogbo, Mrs. Oyetola said the group was inaugurated to consistently anchor the participation of women in politics.

She said: “Today, we are unveiling Akoni Obinrin Osun (Akosun). It is a body put together by women in this state to consistently anchor the participation of women in politics. “Akoni Obinrin comprise of women of courage, women with passion, and women of accomplishments, who have resolved to use their time, substance and intellect to actively give progressive direction to politics in our state.

“Our current focus in Akoni Obinrin is to mobilise, in an unprecedented manner for the victory of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the other candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections.

“Nigerian women have stood up in history for issues that contributed to the evolution and development of Nigeria. Names such as Madam Efunroye Tinubu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Margaret Ekpo, Virginia Etiaba, Sarah Nnadzwa Jubril, Kudirat Abiola, Florence Ita-Giwa, stand out in history as brave and irrepressible women who have changed the horizon of political and economic participation of the country.

“Here in Osun, we are equally not lacking in amazons, who have been dogged at women mobilization. Our women in national and state legislatures, executive positions and businesses must be commended for their agility, bravery and tenacity. Your efforts are changing things and rekindling the hope that we shall soon get a country and states that would engender better standard of living.

“We are at the cusp of history. Let us rise again and bring up that country we all yearn for. Let’s renew the hope in our children. Your engagements led to the unprecedented increase in the number of voters that turned out in the last election in the state. We can do this again. We must get into each house in this state and get every eligible voter to come out and do the needful.”

Oyetola further urged the women to continue to mobilise support for Tinubu and other APC candidates in the state.

In her keynote address, the President, Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation, Dr.(Mrs) Florence Ajimobi charged women to be interested in issues of governance and be active participants in politics, considering that good or bad governance, ultimately have effect on women, children and the society.

Ajimobi said: “Let us show interest in who governs us who becomes our local government chairman, our governor our president. Our focus should be on who we trust and who has the track record of performance.

“That is why this theme: ‘Braving the odds to make a difference’, is quite apt when considered against the background of the challenges confronting women in our society. That is why you all are Akoni Obinrin, that courageous woman, that brave, modern day Amazon who, in spite of all odds, all impediments across her way, still finds a way to make a difference.

“You will agree with me that among all the candidates we have today, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) towers above all, in terms of track record of performance.

“He is someone we trust, he is someone under whose presidency, women will thrive. Most importantly we should also put ourselves forward to ensure all our APC candidates in the forthcoming election in 2023 win by giving them all our support. It will not be easy, but inch by inch, we will have our way, because success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Also speaking, Governor Gboyega Oyetola commended the Osun first lady for demonstrating foresight, creativity and unbridled passion to empower Osun women and launch them into our inclusive tendencies to earn their place in the annals of Osun history.
