Oyo Assembly passes 32 bills in two years

The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has declared the 10th Assembly a proactive and people-centred institution, setting new benchmarks in legislative performance.

Speaking during a special session marking the Assembly’s second anniversary, Ogundoyin revealed that 32 out of 34 bills had been passed, with the remaining two currently undergoing critical scrutiny at the committee level.

The session, held in Ibadan, was attended by Governor Seyi Makinde, who also used the occasion to present the State of the State Address.

Ogundoyin said the Assembly had covered key sectors including education, health, economy, security, infrastructure, and social welfare. He also noted that House Committees had presented over 102 reports, moved 106 motions, considered 41 urgent matters, and adopted more than 400 resolutions.

Highlighting a major innovation, Ogundoyin announced the establishment of a Post-Legislative Scrutiny (PLS) Unit, making the Oyo Assembly the first among state legislatures in Nigeria to introduce a mechanism for evaluating the impact of laws passed.

He said, “This initiative ensures that every law serves its intended purpose and contributes meaningfully to the state’s development.”

The Speaker also commended Governor Makinde’s support, citing improvements in staff welfare, including timely salary payments, 30% CONLESS implementation for legislative staff, and monthly release of operational funds.

He further disclosed the approval of the recruitment of 181 new staff for the Assembly, assuring that the process would be strictly based on merit.
