Oyo Assembly urges Makinde to release N500m to Ajimobi Technical University

The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to fulfill his pledge to release N500 million to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, in the 2024 fiscal year.

The lawmakers also urged the governor to commence monthly subvention payments to the institution from January 2026 to ensure sustainable academic and administrative operations.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education, and seconded by Hon. Babajide Adebayo on Wednesday.

Presenting the motion, Fowokanmi said the university was struggling with underfunding, which has affected infrastructure, staff welfare, and academic activities. He noted that the institution currently depends on scholarships, internally generated revenue, and TETFund support, which are insufficient to meet its needs.

He commended Governor Makinde for inaugurating the university’s Governing Council but stressed that the N500 million earlier promised in 2024 has yet to be released. He added that the school’s financial burden had worsened with the new minimum wage, forcing it to take bank loans to pay salaries.

Speaker Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin directed the House Committee on Tertiary Education to meet with the university’s management to review its financial records and challenges. He said the findings would guide further legislative interventions to strengthen the institution.
