Oyo backs security push with aircraft purchase, ₦126bn for roads, solar projects

The Oyo State Government has approved the immediate procurement of two aircraft worth ₦7.7 billion to strengthen security efforts across the state. The move targets rising concerns over kidnapping, illegal mining, and other criminal activities, especially in remote areas.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this after the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday. He noted that despite the relative peace in Oyo compared to other states, the government is not taking any chances with security.

The aircraft, DA 42 MNG models, are equipped with advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) technology. They are capable of detecting and identifying targets at both high and low altitudes, making them ideal for security operations.

Oyelade explained that the aircraft were chosen over helicopters due to their cost-efficiency and easier maintenance. He added that the same model is used by the Nigerian Air Force, which will enhance cooperation between state and federal security agencies.

Highlighting the state’s vast geography, he noted that Oyo spans 28,454 square kilometres—larger than ten African countries. This size necessitates aerial surveillance to support local security units like Amotekun.

The commissioner stated that Oyo’s Amotekun Corps is the most robust in the Southwest, with 2,500 personnel, 181 vehicles, and 450 motorcycles. Operatives also receive the region’s highest monthly pay, with the lowest rank earning ₦116,000.

The council also approved major infrastructure projects, including bridges and interchanges along the 110km Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road. The northeast and southwest segments—covering areas like Molarere, Odo-Oba, and Abiola Ajimobi Technical University—will cost ₦83.03 billion, with 72km to be completed before 2027.

In addition, road rehabilitation projects worth over ₦43 billion were approved, alongside a ₦595 million allocation for the maintenance of the Light-Up Oyo solar project, with ₦190 million to be paid monthly for its sustainability.
