The Oyo State Government has confirmed the deaths of two people following the unrest that erupted in the Ojoo area of Ibadan and has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the government appealed for calm among residents after violence reportedly broke out following the killing of a commercial tricycle rider on Tuesday night. It urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and allow security agencies to carry out their duties.

The incident was said to have heightened tension between some Yoruba and Hausa residents in the community, prompting the deployment of security personnel to restore order and prevent further violence.

Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, who visited the area on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, appealed to residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue into the incident.

Lawal assured the public that the state government would not tolerate lawlessness, stressing that anyone found culpable in the killings would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He also confirmed that two people lost their lives during the unrest, while noting that security agencies had intensified efforts to stabilise the situation. Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere in parts of Ojoo as tense during the early hours of Wednesday.

Security operatives were reported to have brought the situation under control, with patrols continuing across the affected area to prevent further clashes and reassure residents of their safety.

The Chairman of Akinyele Local Government Area, Hon. Akinwole Ayobami Akinleye, also appealed to residents to avoid reprisals and refrain from spreading unverified information. He said the local and state governments were working closely with security agencies to protect lives and property and restore lasting peace in the community.
