Oyo government denies viral entertainment tax claim

By Adejayan Gbenga –
The Oyo State Government has dismissed as false a viral post alleging plans to tax social events such as burials, weddings, and naming ceremonies.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said the post was a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the image of Governor Seyi Makinde.
Oyelade clarified that any genuine government tax document must include a revenue code, the signature of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Board chairman, and the board’s official address — all of which were missing from the circulating document.
He urged the public to disregard the fake message and cautioned media platforms against spreading unverified information.
The commissioner added that the government remains committed to transparency, good governance, and the delivery of developmental projects across Oyo State.
