Oyo govt defends appointment of Prince Owoade as Alaafin-Elect

The Oyo State Government has insisted it followed the due process in the appointment of the Alaafin-elect, Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade.
It would be recalled that on Friday, governor Seyi Makinde announced Prince Owoade as the new Alaafin.
His announcement got a pushback from the Oyo Kingmakers who rejected the appointment of Prince Owoade.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, told PREMIUM TIMES that the government will not engage in further public debate on the matter for now, saying that the state government would make further comments when necessary.
“We are going to make further comments when it is necessary. For now, the statement the government has put out will suffice,” he said.
Also, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, said, the Oyomesi didn’t follow due process when they forwarded Gbadegesin’s name.
“There is a process for selection and approval. When the Oyomesi forwarded the name, the governor noted that the due process wasn’t followed, but this time, the process was adhered to.
“It wasn’t the governor who elected Prince Owoade; it was the Oyomesi that followed the proper steps, and the governor simply accepted and approved the recommendation”, said Sulaimon.
