Oyo inaugurates vigilante committee to strengthen security in rural areas

The Oyo State Government has inaugurated a Vigilante Committee comprising 10 State Coordinators and 33 Local Government Commanders to bolster grassroots security across the state.

The swearing-in ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, took place at the Local Government Staff Training Centre, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Hon. Toyin Balogun, stated that the initiative reflects Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to enhancing community-based security across the 33 local government areas. She emphasized that true security includes trust-building and tackling root causes of social unrest.

Balogun further urged the officers to adopt gender-sensitive approaches in their operations, and collaborate with women-focused and social groups to curb domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. (Mrs.) Mofoluwake Ibitoye, emphasized the role of equity and justice in sustainable peace. She charged the officers to display leadership, integrity, and vigilance in carrying out their duties.

In his acceptance speech, the newly appointed Commandant of the Vigilante Committee, Alhaji Olabanji Abiodun, thanked Governor Makinde and the Ministry for their support and pledged the committee’s readiness to safeguard communities across the state.

The inauguration drew attendance from top government officials, representatives of security agencies, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations.
