Oyo to pioneer sub-national AfCFTA implementation in Nigeria

By Adejayan Gbenga –

The Oyo State Government is preparing to launch its Sub-National African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Programme, becoming one of the first states in Nigeria to adopt the continental trade framework at the state level.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Special Adviser on International Trade and AfCFTA, Neo Theodore Tlhaselo, said the initiative is aimed at positioning Oyo State as a competitive hub for trade across Africa.

“This is not just a ceremonial launch; it is a clear signal that Oyo State is ready to embrace cross-border trade, attract investment, and establish itself as a key player within the AfCFTA landscape,” she said.

The programme will highlight priority sectors of the state’s economy, build the capacity of local businesses for exports, and connect small and medium enterprises with regional trade opportunities. A central feature will be the unveiling of the Oyo State AfCFTA Strategy Document, which outlines the state’s plan to take advantage of the agreement.

The launch is expected to draw officials from the AfCFTA Secretariat as well as stakeholders from government, business, and industry within and outside Nigeria.

Tlhaselo praised Governor Seyi Makinde for placing international trade and diversification at the centre of his administration’s economic agenda, adding that with its population of over eight million and vibrant business climate, Oyo State is well positioned to become a regional trade hub.

She further noted that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national strategy under the AfCFTA, which covers 54 countries and a market of more than 1.4 billion people.
