Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Friday pledged to continue prioritising healthcare access and equity across the state.

Speaking during the presentation of the State of the State Address at the House of Assembly in Ibadan, Makinde revealed that over 18,000 residents across the 33 Local Government Areas have benefitted from the Omituntun Free Health Mission.

He stated that his administration is currently upgrading 106 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state, while also recruiting healthcare workers for both primary and secondary health facilities.

“Our PHC upgrade programme is ongoing, ensuring residents in all zones have access to reliable and affordable care closer to home. We previously upgraded over 209 PHCs under Omituntun 1.0 and equipped 264 centres, including the upgraded ones. Now, we are upgrading 106 more PHCs across all LGAs,” he said.

In the education sector, Makinde said the government completed the upgrade of classroom blocks in 105 rural schools under the World Bank-supported BESDA AF-TESS programme to bridge the urban-rural education gap.

He added that over the last year, the administration recruited more than 14,000 teaching and non-teaching staff to address manpower shortages in the basic and secondary education sector, with attention to curriculum alignment, teacher motivation, and digital learning tools.

“In addition, in 2025, we began the upgrade of 100 schools across the state, with 36 projects currently ongoing. We remain committed to reducing the infrastructure deficit in our schools,” the governor said.
