OYSCATECH staff declare indefinite strike over delayed, incomplete salaries

By Adejayan Gbenga –

Staff of the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora, have embarked on an indefinite strike over persistent salary delays and partial payments, crippling academic and administrative activities since July 1, 2025.

The industrial action was jointly declared by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), citing unresolved salary concerns and management’s failure to act on repeated appeals.

A joint statement by Comrades Tajudeen Adeyemo (NASU), Oyediran S. O. (SSANIP), and Tiamiyu M. B. (ASUP) revealed that the college recently informed staff of its inability to augment the state government’s subvention to pay full salaries.

The unions noted that despite a 25% increase in monthly subvention from the Oyo State Government since January 2025 and an improvement in the college’s internally generated revenue, staff continue to receive fractional and delayed salaries.

They described the recurring situation as demoralising, adding that workers are now anxious about the July salary, fearing another round of incomplete payments. They said the crisis has dragged on for several months, disrupting operations and morale.

The union leaders lamented that OYSCATECH is the only tertiary institution in the state facing such persistent salary issues, and argued that management’s excuses are no longer tenable, especially with increased revenue and tuition fees.

According to them, the recent hike in student tuition has not led to better staff welfare, leaving workers to suffer despite the college’s financial gains—a situation they described as deeply unfair.

The unions called on Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently intervene by increasing the monthly subvention further and implementing sustainable solutions. They vowed not to return to work until their demands are met.
