Panic erupts in Akure as schools shut abruptly over security concerns

By Boye Oyeyemi

Parents and school children have been thrown into a frenzy as several schools in Ilu Abo and neighbouring communities were abruptly closed following reported security threats on Monday.

According to reports, parents were reported to have rushed to the schools to pick up their children after sounds of gunshots were heard in Kajola village in Ilu Abo, close to the Akure Airport.

Amid the confusion, the Managing Director of a commercial farm who is also the Secretary to the Okeluju Local Council Development Area in Akoko North West Local Government Area, Joseph Aladesuyi, was allegedly abducted by suspected gunmen.

Residents said the development forced school authorities in the area to shut down academic activities as frightened parents hurriedly arrived to take their children home.

As at the time of filing this report, security agencies are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
