Panic grips Oyo community over alleged bandits’ attack threat

Residents of Ikoyi-Ile town in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been gripped by fear following alleged threats of an impending attack by suspected bandits.

The development comes barely days after a deadly assault on Oloka village within the Old Oyo National Park, where gunmen reportedly killed five people last Tuesday.

Community sources disclosed to newsmen that residents recently discovered two handwritten notes believed to have been left by the suspected bandits, warning of an attack scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

One of the notes, written in Yoruba and titled “Lati Odo Bandit” (From the Bandits), warned residents to prepare for the attackers and comply with their demands or face violence. A second note, written in English, also allegedly contained threats, suggesting that the attackers would soon arrive in the community.

Although the authenticity of the messages has not been independently verified, the alleged threats have heightened tension in Ikoyi-Ile, with residents reportedly remaining indoors and tightening security around their homes and businesses.

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed awareness of the situation. Its spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ayanlade Olayinka, said in a message that investigations had commenced, even though no formal complaint was lodged prior to media reports.

“We have launched an investigation to determine the source and intent of the notes. The individual who discovered them is currently being debriefed,” Ayanlade said, assuring residents of the police’s commitment to their safety.
