PDP chieftains urge members to join opposition coalition ahead of 2027 elections

A group of influential leaders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on members of the embattled opposition party to embrace an emerging coalition aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

The call came in a communiqué released Tuesday night following a high-level meeting in Abuja, where prominent party figures expressed concern over the deepening crisis within the PDP and what they described as a “disturbing decline” in the party’s relevance and discipline since the 2023 elections.

Signatories to the communiqué include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President David Mark; ex-governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), and Liyel Imoke (Cross River); as well as former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus.

Citing a collapse in internal leadership and the erosion of the founding ideals of the party, the group accused the PDP leadership of failing to uphold its constitution, leading to what they described as a “chaotic and undisciplined” state.

“The PDP, which once played a critical role in stabilising Nigeria and positioning it as a continental leader, is now a shadow of its former self,” the communiqué stated. “It has been reduced to a platform overtaken by smaller and less endowed nations in terms of democratic influence and governance standards.”

The leaders called on “well-meaning” PDP members and patriotic Nigerians to align with the growing coalition, which they said would be anchored on national unity, democratic renewal, security, economic recovery, and an unflinching resolve to fight institutional corruption.

They also stressed that coalition members would work together to develop clear strategies for electoral victory in 2027, tailored to both local and national dynamics.

The statement is the latest in a series of consultations and realignment efforts by opposition leaders seeking to build a unified political front capable of challenging the APC’s dominance in the next election cycle.
