Pelosi’s influence: Securing Kamala Harris’ VP pick
Nancy Pelosi has once again demonstrated her significant influence within the Democratic Party with Kamala Harris’ VP selection. Pelosi, known for her political prowess, had favored Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for the vice-presidential spot, and this week, Harris officially named Walz as her running mate.
Pelosi expressed her support for Walz on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” praising his vision for the country and his commitment to working-class families, rural America, and veterans. Walz, who served in the House alongside Pelosi from 2007 to 2019, was a preferred candidate despite previous disagreements, such as Pelosi blocking his bid to become ranking member of the Veterans Affairs Committee.
While it’s unclear how much direct influence Pelosi had on Harris’ decision, her political sway within the party is undeniable. Before Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, Pelosi had been quietly working behind the scenes to encourage his exit, even suggesting in public that he needed to reconsider his campaign.
In a recent interview with NPR’s Mary Louise Kelly, Pelosi emphasized that other Democrats approached her with concerns about Biden’s candidacy, and she denied initiating any calls to push him out. Despite her significant role in the party, Pelosi has maintained that she was merely a recipient of these concerns.
As for her relationship with Biden, Pelosi stated she hasn’t spoken to him since his decision to drop out and remains uncertain about the current state of their relationship.
