No fewer than six persons were confirmed dead on Tuesday after a petrol-laden trailer crushed pedestrians and commercial tricycle operators in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The truck, reportedly carrying about 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, also destroyed at least five tricycles during the incident, while several other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The accident occurred at the Fruits Market along the Oje–Beere route in the Ibadan South-East Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses lamented the recurring accidents along the route, stating that the driver lost control at the Beere end of the road and rammed into two tricycles, killing passengers before heading towards the Oje market, where more victims were reportedly struck.

Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed that the exact number of casualties was still being determined as of press time.
